Radio Analytical Service lab
The IHME's Radiation monitoring lab is Radio-analytical Laboratory for the measurement of
radioactivity in foodstuffs and environmental materials and tests a broad range of samples
on the Contracts of the Government, Health Ministry, food producers and the public. The
laboratory is designated as the official national laboratory for testing of radioactivity
in foodstuffs and so performs a vital function with regard to food safety.
It is the policy of the Laboratory to achieve and maintain a high standard of quality
consistent with client and regulatory requirements in all aspects of the work it carries
out. It implements an quality system which has recently been revised to comply with the
ISO 17025 standard. It is a regular participant in international
intercomparison exercises. The Laboratory holds accreditation, which is awarded by the
Ukrainian National Accreditation Board, for a broad range of the tests
it undertakes.
The Laboratory is equipped with state of the art equipment for radiometric determination
of a range of radionuclides in food and environmental matrices. It is equipped for gamma
spectroscopy, alpha spectroscopy, liquid scintillation counting and total alpha beta
determination. Determinations routinely undertaken in the Laboratory include:
gamma - emitters, Radon , Uranium , Radium , lead-210, polonium-210, tritium , carbon-14 and strontium-90.
The Laboratory is committed to maintaining its expertise and equipment in line with
current best international practice. Through international collaboration and research
activities it has developed links with other quality laboratories across Europe.
